We All Think We're Great Drivers, but the Stats Tell a Different Story

Most of us believe we’re good drivers. In fact, 80% of drivers rate their own driving as “very good” or “excellent,” even while nearly 90% say other motorists are speeding, being aggressive, or driving more recklessly than ever. So, what gives?

Overconfidence is one of the most dangerous habits we carry behind the wheel. It’s what lets us believe we can sneak a quick text, scroll social media at a red light, or even watch a short video without consequence. But Nationwide’s latest driver survey reveals just how common and risky these behaviors have become.

  • 20% of drivers admit to texting while driving
  • 15% use social media
  • 13% watch videos
  • 11% read or write emails
  • Half eat or drink behind the wheel
  • 13% get ready for work while driving

We justify these distractions by telling ourselves “it’ll just take a second” or “I’m still paying attention.” But even a momentary lapse can have lasting consequences. And with more cars now equipped with built-in screens and infotainment systems, the temptation to multitask is higher than ever.

The Road Feels Riskier, and It Is

According to the survey, 72% of drivers frequently witness road rage. Two-thirds say other drivers regularly irritate them. Over one-third admit that other people’s behavior behind the wheel gives them road rage of their own.

Distractions do more than increase the risk of accidents. They raise stress, fuel aggression, and create a tense driving environment for everyone.

What Can We Do?

It starts with self-awareness. We have to stop assuming we’re the exception. Distracted driving isn’t just something other people do. It’s something many of us do more often than we realize.

To stay safer on the road:

  • Put your phone away or use Do Not Disturb mode
  • Avoid eating, grooming, or multitasking while driving
  • Keep your focus on the road, not your infotainment screen
  • Install a dashcam to encourage accountability
  • Practice patience and calm driving habits to reduce stress and improve decision-making
